Your SPNN bargaining team met with Sharp management again today and had good discussions on all outstanding contract issues. While no tentative agreements were reached today, we were able to narrow our issues to the ones most important to you, and the ones which will result in a fair contract for all RNs.

In the past few days, management for Sharp HealthCare has disseminated misleading information to frighten Sharp RNs and stop Sharp RNs from exercising their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. Management for Sharp understands the power that the nurses have standing together and they are doing everything in their power to weaken your resolve.

The SPNN bargaining team met with Sharp management on November 20 for roughly five hours. Joe Mansolillo, the Federal mediator, facilitated the meeting. The November 20 session is the first of a series of meetings that will occur this week in an attempt to reach a tentative contract that would be acceptable to SPNN RNs.

We Will Strike November 28-30

Today we submitted a 10-day strike notice to management for a ULP strike to begin at 0700 (7:00 am) on November 28, 2016. The strike will last for 3 days. A strike is always a last resort. But we must do whatever it takes to stop Sharp’s repeated violations of federal labor law and refusal to address patient care problems caused by an escalating crisis in nurse turnover.

Our Union is aware of Sharp’s communication and vigorously disagrees with its characterization of our negotiations being at impasse. As a result of their unilateral implementation of its last contract proposal, we will begin conducting strike vote meetings on Wednesday, November 2.

Both sides of the table have agreed that recruiting and retaining nurses is a key goal of negotiations, but thus far Sharp hospital administration has not accepted that paying registered nurses far below competitive rates in the area is an obvious impediment to recruiting and retaining the best nurses. This week’s negotiations sessions were a clear testament of the power we have when we come together. Management withdrew their proposal on weekend scheduling. RNs from across Sharp Healthcare delivered an important letter to Sharp CEO Michael Murphy’s office this morning, signed by over 300 RNs from the SPNN bargaining and RN action teams. The letter highlighted recruitment and retention of nurses, one of our top priorities in our fight for a new contract.

On July 28, we reached tentative agreement on a slight modification to our prior agreement on Article 22: Safety and Health during bargaining. We also agreed to maintain current contract language on Article 17: Leaves of Absence. However, we continue to have significant disagreements on several issues important to all nurses. Many UNAC/UHCP members showed up for the first day of SPNN bargaining. Management was blown away! People brought their kids and even a few pets! Kids played games in the back, while members participated, and supported the bargaining team. It’s an experience not to be missed.
