SPNN Bargaining Update #4
July 2016
We reached tentative agreement on a slight modification to our prior agreement on Article 22: Safety and Health during bargaining on July 28. We also agreed to maintain current contract language on Article 17: Leaves of Absence. However, we continue to have significant disagreements on several issues important to all nurses:
Weekend Scheduling: We disagree with management’s proposal to force us to work a “make-up” weekend shift if we call off sick on a scheduled weekend shift.
Mandatory Overtime: We disagree with management’s proposal to greatly expand the conditions under which they can mandate us to work overtime; we have proposed no mandatory overtime except in the case of a declared state of emergency.
Cancellation of Scheduled Hours: We disagree with management’s proposal to continue the practice of being placed on mandatory on-call when cancelled; we have proposed voluntary on-call.
Seniority: We disagree with management’s interpretation of our seniority proposal. On July 14, we proposed that time spent in a bargaining unit nurse position counts for seniority for the purposes of job bidding and layoff only, and that time outside of the bargaining unit does not count. We do not lose seniority when moving to a non-bargaining unit position, it is simply “frozen” until we return and is then reinstated.
