What are Schwartz Rounds?

Schwartz Rounds is a monthly interdisciplinary forum in which clinical team members safely and candidly discuss difficult social, emotional, ethical, moral, and spiritual issues inherent in providing and improving patient care. The forum is an opportunity to discuss how communication among caregivers and between caregivers and patients influences care. Using a case review format, Rounds give voice to unspoken concerns and diverse perspectives of the hospital team.

Since the focus is on the team and not on the clinical details of the cases, caregivers can share their experiences, thoughts and feelings on thought-provoking topics drawn from actual patient-care experiences. Caregivers are better able to make personal connections with patients and colleagues and sustain themselves in their work when they have greater insight into their own responses and feelings.

What Happens at the Rounds?

A panel of caregivers, directly involved in a case, make a brief presentation. This panel includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, psychologists, and allied health professionals. Following the presentation the audience is invited to share their own non treatment perspectives and broader, but related issues.
