A Victory for Patient Safety at Garden Grove

Earlier this month, we were informed by Garden Grove management that they planned to begin including LVNs in ICU staffing. This raised serious concerns regarding patient safety. In response, last week a delegation of ICU RNs along with our Union Representatives, met with management to present our deep concerns. We are pleased to inform you that after we raised these concerns, management decided to suspend their decision. This is an important victory for our patients and our licenses.

Proposed “Temporary Waiver” in Budget Would Waive Staffing Ratios During Meal Breaks

The proposed language would allow hospitals to waive the staffing ratios on all units during meals and breaks. “The UNAC/UHCP, AFSCME legislative team immediately developed a plan to actively oppose the language and to inform the legislators that UNAC/UHCP, AFSCME would never support anything that would threaten the staffing ratios that California Registered Nurses worked so hard to achieve and the patients deserve,” said Barbara Blake, RN, UNAC/UHCP State Secretary/Treasurer.
