UNAC/UHCP Wins United Way’s 2016 Miguel Contreras Labor Award
August 2016
On August 22, 2016, UNAC/UHCP was honored with the Miguel Contreras Labor Award at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles 2016 Annual Philanthropy Awards for our part in creating pathways out of poverty for families and improving the quality of life in Greater Los Angeles.
UNAC/UHCP Secretary Charmaine Morales, RN, accepted the award on behalf of President Denise Duncan, RN, at the luncheon held in Los Angeles:
Our union, UNAC/UHCP, is committed to community service. For our members, it’s personal. Each day we go to work, we touch the lives of those who may be victims of domestic violence, gang violence, homelessness, poverty, and many who have not had educational opportunities. When these patients are in the clinics, ED, OR, or home care setting, they are in an extremely vulnerable state. Patients depend and trust in us to provide care and be their advocates. As health care professionals, there are many times when we wish we could do more.
By stepping out in the community, we get to advocate and lend a hand in what is others’ realities, and be a part of making lives better in our free time. We are doing something about the social injustices in our communities and it is a great honor to be a part of programs that promote education, economic empowerment and care for basic needs.
This award is for all members who give of themselves outside of their normal workday.
UNAC/UHCP affiliate officers, members, and staff representatives from some of the affiliates that partnered with the United Way this past year were in attendance:
