Two From UNAC/UHCP Among 100 Outstanding Filipino-Americans

August 2012

Member Ralph Umayam, RN, and Organizer Thor Causing from UNAC/UHCP were named as two of the 100 Outstaanding Filipino-Americans in the USA, by the Philippine Press Photographers, at a black tie event on July 28 at the Universal City Hilton.

Ralph was presented the award in Health Care. He is a Case Manager in transitional care at Kaiser Sunset and a member of the Specialty Care Nurses of Southern California (SCNSC), one of UNAC/UHCP’s newest affiliates. “I’m honored by the award,” said Ralph. “And I’m thankful to the organizers of this charitable event.”

Ralph makes sure that patients get the appropriate level of care while in the hospital and coordinates their follow-up care after discharge, helping them to maintain healthy practices. He also promotes preventative care. “This honor inspires me to continue to do the best I can for my patients,” Ralph said.

Thor won for his leadership in the labor movement. He helped to organize Ralph Umayam’s affiliate, SCNSC, as well as the Kaiser Permanente Midwives and Wound Ostomy Nurses (KPMWON) and the Beverly Hospital RNs of BHRNA. Thor is also an active member of the Filipino-American Health Workers Association, which gave public support to the Beverly Nurses in their campaign for a contract to guarantee safe patient care at Beverly Hospital earlier this year.

Proceeds from the event will benefit a home for underprivileged, sick, abused and disadvantaged children in the Philippines called Bantay Bata 163. Funds have also been earmarked for flood relief, in response to the terrible recent flooding in Manila.

UNAC/UHCP helped to sponsor the awards ceremony.
