California - United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) members and staff participated in the AFSCME California State PEOPLE Convention in Sacramento on March 14 and 15. Members from all eight AFSCME California affiliates came together to vote on the political endorsements for state public offices.

In addition, attendees visited the Capitol to lobby legislators on bills important to our affiliates. The UNAC/UHCP representatives met with seven members of the Business and Professions Committees of both the Senate and Assembly to discuss our three major concerns regarding SB 1111, which proposes to reform the Board of Registered Nursing.   Our primary concerns with the bill include:

  1. Tthe mandatory posting of home addresses of health care professionals reported to the licensing board;
  2. The mandatory reporting of any suspension or termination for the causes listed in the bill, even before any licensing board investigation has been conducted; and
  3. The lack of a prohibition on “borrowing” fees paid to health care boards for other purposes.

UHAC/UHCP will continue to follow SB 1111 to ensure our members’ and the public’s interests are protected.  To stay informed on this important bill, members may sign-up for legislative alerts by texting “UNACLEG” to 37398.

UNAC/UHCP members in attendance included: Edward Concepción, RN ( Kaiser Panorama City), Adriana Rubio, RN (Kaiser Downey), Korla St. Cyr, RN (Kaiser Baldwin Park), Stephen Soto de Mayor, PA (Kaiser Riverside), Cynthia Turner, RN (Kaiser San Diego), Tim Uliasz, RN (Kaiser San Diego) and Valentina Zamora-Arreola, RN (Kaiser Downey). UNAC/UHCP staff in attendance included: State Secretary Barbara Blake, RN, Political Director Jimmy Gomez, Political Representatives Jeremy Lanni and Eric Robles and Staff Representative Armin Reyes.
