Patients Come First for Corona RNs
June 2014
We support expansion of Corona Regional Medical Center if it will improve quality of care and add beds.
But the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) filed for UHS Corona’s planned expansion does not adequately address these impacts:
• Patient and employee exposure to toxic air and hazardous materials such as asbestos, mercury, PCBs and lead during construction.
• Persistent understaffing. If they can’t meet California safe staffing ratios now, how will they safeguard patient safety with even more beds?
UHS’s track record includes a 2013 citation by Cal/OSHA for a safety violation involving asbestos removal during construction.
UNAC/UHCP has alerted the City of Corona to these problems in our public comments on the DEIR. We urge the City to require that these impacts be addressed before issuing permits for construction.
