Media Relations and Communications Intern

March 2014

Media Relations and Communications Intern
United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals

Would you like to help union members tell their stories to the media? Do you have an interest in health care and those who work on the front lines of care? UNAC/UHCP is based in San Dimas, California and advocates for over 23,000 members, including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and physician assistants. The UNAC/UHCP communications team is expanding our media operation, and looking for an intern to support our media relations work.

UNAC/UHCP’s communications department works with every other department at UNAC/UHCP, so an internship in our department is a great primer on what a job with a union entails. We’ve run press events to protest dangerous ER procedures in south Riverside County, done media for pickets at four Southern California Kaiser locations, and placed opinion/editorials about the Affordable Care Act in major newspapers like the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our ideal candidate is creative, committed to social justice, outgoing and able to strike up a conversation with almost anyone.

What You Will Learn:
• How to write a press release
• How to prep a subject for an interview by media
• How to pitch a story to a reporter
• How to work with media relations software and maintain a press list
• How to monitor media for an organization
• How to post a press release on a website
• How to add photos or video to a website or social media post
• How to craft more effective Facebook posts
