Legislative Update

March 2012

Board of Registered Nursing is Restored

Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation reconstituting the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) in February.  This was necessary because the BRN, the board that regulates all Registered Nurses in the state of California, was disbanded on January 1, 2012.

The “new” BRN is funded until January 1, 2016.  The entire board will be reappointed under the new bill. We look forward to working with the Governor on appointments.

Get Involved—Become an Guest Observer to the AFSCME Convention

The International AFSCME Convention will be June 18-22, 2012 in Los Angeles.  The International Union, based in Washington, DC, coordinates the union’s actions on major national issues such as privatization of public services, fair taxes and health care.  Every two years, delegates to AFSCME’s International Convention decide on the union’s basic policies.  This is an opportunity to see what our international union will do for the next two years.  Anyone may attend the convention, which will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
