Kim Hawkins: Helping Nurses Helps Patients
November 2014
Kim Hawkins, RN, grew up in Fontana when it was still a close-knit small town, where she attended the same high school as her parents and grandparents. She got an Associate’s Degree at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, and her BSN with honors at Grand Canyon University online. Even as a child she had an interest in medicine and helping others, so naturally she got into health care. But she started small — at an animal hospital, where she worked as an Animal Health Technician for four years. She took a Kaiser receptionist job for the benefits, then decided to become an RN.
Getting involved with her UBT first put her on the path to her latest position as SCNSC’s new Staff Rep. She felt by helping her coworkers she ultimately helped her patients. She became a Contract Specialist and took labor classes at the state office to grow as a Steward.
