Kaiser San Diego Members Take on Safe Staffing Issues

April 2016

On April 19, a delegation of UNAC/UHCP members delivered over 500 safe staffing petition signatures to Jane Finley, senior vice president and executive director of Kaiser Permanente San Diego.

Nurses packed Finley’s office to demand a meeting to resolve issues around unsafe staffing, missed meal periods, and other patient care issues. She walked away and would not address the delegation.

Management then tried to cancel the Registered Nurse Committee (RNC) meeting scheduled for the day. As this was a contractual meeting, nurses took a stand and refused to cancel.

Later that day, management called the Union asking for a meeting to talk about staffing issues. Because of our actions, management now wants to make the Staffing and Scheduling Committee work. This is a crucial step towards safer staffing practices!

This was all made possible by members who stood in solidarity with fellow coworkers by stickering up, signing petitions and joining the April 19 delegation. We will need to continue to stand together and hold management accountable and be vigilant in making sure management adheres to agreed upon standards and ratios!
