Clariza Marin is Watching Our Finances

November 2014

Clariza Marin, UNAC/UHCP’s new director of finance, says her real boss is also her best friend and #1 supporter, her three-year-old son Freddie. Everything she does is for him, and she’s not quite sure what she did with herself before he came along. Though seeing a list of her accomplishments, it’s clear she’s done a lot. She grew up in San Diego, getting her Bachelor’s in International Economics with a minor in Chicano Studies at San Diego State, before attending the New School for Social Research in New York City for her Master’s in Global Political Economy and Finance. She’s been working in finance since high school.

This is only her second job in the labor movement, though she’s always been passionate about what labor stands for and has been involved in other social justice movements. When she worked as head of HR and Benefits Administration in the private sector, she found herself advocating for employee equality to the point that employees essentially viewed her as their union in the absence of a union.
