Bargaining For Our Future

May 2015

CORONA: Negotiations continue for a first contract at Corona Regional Medical Center, after kicking off in the fall. The first contract is usually the toughest, as many of our UNAC/UHCP affiliates have experienced. But the Corona Bargaining Team is strong and determined. They’re sticking together and continue to provide an example for the membership to step up, stand together and claim the voice they won when they united, by winning a contract to secure that voice.

Even without a contract, Corona members are learning the benefits of being in a union, such as exercising their Weingarten rights to representation when facing discipline. Recently a Corona RN won full reinstatement and back pay after being suspended based on dubious information, because she had the support of Corona’s UNAC/UHCP Staff Representative. With the bargaining team and members united, Corona RNs will win a strong contract to protect patients and nurses alike.

KAISER: National Bargaining is in full swing for thousands of UNAC/UHCP members working at Kaiser facilities throughout Southern California. After three days of training on the unique interest-based bargaining used for national bargaining, which covers over 100,000 Kaiser health care workers in 28 unions, bargaining began in three specific areas: healthy workforce, work of the future, and operational and service excellence.

Hundreds of UNAC/UHCP members turned out for bargaining in Manhattan Beach on April 14-16. Bargaining returned to San Jose in late April, and will be at the Sheraton Gateway LAX in mid-May.

For Kaiser members who’d like to attend bargaining, get more information and sign up at the Kaiser bargaining campaign page: unacuhcp.org/campaigns/kaiserbargaining.

KAISER PHARMACISTS: Kaiser Pharmacists voted to join UNAC/UHCP in February and began negotiations in April on their first UNAC/UHCP contract. Great progress has been made including a significant number of Tentative Agreements.
