Ballots have been mailed for voting on the 2016 AFSCME Convention delegates from UNAC/UHCP. To review candidate biographies, see below. Ballots must be returned by 9 am, June 16, 2016.
The 2016 AFSCME Convention will be held July 18-22 in Las Vegas.
More than 5,000 delegates, alternates and guests are expected to participate in AFSCME’s 42nd International Convention. Elections, sector caucuses and workshops on a wide variety of topics fill most of the agenda. More information on the convention can be found at 2016.afscme.org.

Thank you for taking the time to read my biography. I am running for a position as Delegate to the 2016 AFSCME Convention. I am asking for your vote to elect me to represent UNAC/UHCP Health Care Professionals at the 2016 AFSCME Convention. If elected I promise to represent the UNAC/UHCP Health Care Professional in a dignified and responsible manner.
Currently I am an active member of my affiliate, representing the RN's and NP's at Kaiser Downey as the Medical Office President. I have been in the elected position as a KDRNA Officer for the past 35 years. I have also represented UNAC/UHCP as an elected member to the Board of Directors for approximately the past 30 years. I have been elected many times over the years as a Delegate/Alternate to the AFSCME Convention and NUHHCE Convention, as well as our own State Convention. I am 100% committed to our union and have been elected to represent the Kaiser RN/NP/PA on the National Bargaining Negotiating Team every year since the 2000 agreement was first bargained! In 2013 I served for 6 months as the appointed UNAC/UHCP Interim Secretary Treasurer.

Rose Sutton:
Hello my name is Rose Sutton. I have worked for Kaiser for 35 + years in varied roles the most current position as Nurse Educator for the Staff Education Department in Orange County. During my longevity with Kaiser I was able to obtain a Bachelor/PHN and later a Master’s Degree in Nursing (I started at Kaiser with an Associate Degree in nursing). This is my 2nd term as the Orange County Vice President SCNSC. Prior to that I became a Union Steward for SCNSC in 2014. I have been involved with the union as UNAC for 10 years then later with the UNAC affiliate SCNSC for the past 3 years. It is my responsibility as an officer to make sure all SCNSC staff receive fair and equal treatment. I love my job as Vice President because it allows me to do what I do best. I am asking for your vote to attend the AFSCME Convention in July 2016. If elected I will represent our affiliate with pride and devotion for our cause.
Sojourner Lindsey:
Hi, my name is Sojourner Lindsey. I am a registered nurse. I have been in the nursing field for nearly 16 years. I received my associate degree in nursing at West Coast University. I received my baccalaureate nursing degree and public health certification at University of Phoenix. At an early age I discovered I had a passion for helping others. My initial interest was caring for my father’s general health. As my passion progressed, I discovered my passion for helping abused teens, children and the mentally ill. I have a true compassion for enriching lives. I enjoy being proactive helping people feel empowered to help themselves. Empowerment is a selfless legacy that keeps on giving. Becoming a registered nurse truly encompasses who I really am as a person. I am forever giving, evolving and embarking on new endeavors.
Carmen Pascual:
My name is Carmen Pascual a native of the Philippines, born in the city of Tarlac, studied in the city of Manila. I graduated as Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, I worked as an Operating Room Nurse in one of the hospitals in the Philippines run by Nuns. This experience helped me realize how important it is to be thrifty and respect everyone i come across with.
After a few years, I went to California, USA and started working as an Operating Room Technician at PVHMC while awaiting for the results of my Board of Nursing exams. Transition to Circulating Registered Nurse was a breeze after passing it.
I also started a family and have 2 boys, Gaston and Karl. Divorced after 10 years of marriage. Now I have a Significant Other, who I have been with for 15 years.
Transferred to Kaiser Permanente after 5 years of working at PVHMC. Though KP Fontana was much closer to home, the only opening then was at KP LA Sunset. It was a great sacrifice leaving at 430am each day to be able to clock in at 6am. Going home is another trivial ride after having worked for 12 hrs and a 2-hr drive. I did this for 8 months. I was lucky to have followed up the position that was posted at KP Fontana and I got in, also as an Operating Room Registered Nurse. Definitely will I not complain of the 15 minute drive each way to work and back. It has been a great 26 years of work at KP Fontana. I love doing what I’ve been doing, especially as a patient advocate, will respect each and every patient i have and treat each one as my very own.
Eric Robles:
My Name is Eric Robles and it has been a pleasure serving UNAC/UHCPs membership as your Political and Legislative Director. I am proud of the work we have been doing especially in protecting your license and working to strengthen your profession. Last year, I was happy to successfully save the 12 hours shift from being eliminated in hospitals through out CA. I hope I can count on your support.

I have been a UNAC/UHCP member since 1983 when affiliate became official
Have participated in multiple AFSCME, AFL-CIO, NUHHCE, and UNA conventions.
Past member of UNAC/UHCP BOD (multiple terms). Past officer of KSDHCPA (various positions).
Have been on several negotiation teams and helped organize SPNN as well as other organizing campaigns.
I have always been very proud to be a part and have represented UNAC/UHCP professionally at all times.

Debra Sung:
My name is Debra Sung. I have been a physical therapist for the past 20 years. We were very fortunate to become members of UNAC/AFSCME just 3 years ago. I became involved in union work as the President of my affiliate (UTSC) because I have always had an interest in helping people and solving problems in a way that is respectful and meets the needs of everyone involved. I believe in the power and voice of people and I feel it is often overlooked. I am passionate about people coming together and communicating to resolve issues. Without the protection of the union, workers are too vulnerable to speak openly and patients, co-workers and even the organization suffers without input from front-line workers. I would love to represent UNAC at the AFSCME convention! I will attend all of the sessions and use our voice to help influence the direction of our National union. This is a trying time for union workers, I want to learn more about helping to keep our union strong and growing. Thank you!
Scott Byington:
Hello, my name is Scott Byington I am a registered nurse at St. Francis Medical Center and the president of the St. Francis Registered Nurses Association. I have served as an affiliate officer since 1996. I have also served as an elected UNAC/UHCP Board of Director since 2006. I have been an expert witness for many healthcare/union related legislative issues such as the implementation/enforcement of staffing ratios and the need for safer workplace environments. In addition to these activities, I have participated in the organization of other UNAC/UHCP affiliates such as Lakewood Regional Medical Center and Beverly Hospital. As a UNAC/UHCP member, I request for my brothers and sisters to vote for me to become a delegate to the 2016 AFSCME Convention.

Karen Purugganan:
My name is Karen Purugganan and I currently serve as SCNSC vice president (VP) for Baldwin Park. It is the first year I have served in a union role, and have found assisting my colleagues in this capacity rewarding. I have been a nurse for 19 years, and have worked at Baldwin Park’s staff education department for the past 4 years. I recently received my doctorate in nursing practice, have a master’s in healthcare administration, and a master’s in nursing science with a focus in education. I am a married mother of five children ranging from 22 to 7 years old. In regard to hobbies, I enjoy running, sewing, and spending time with my children. It would be a privilege to attend the AFSCME convention since it will provide me with the opportunity to learn and network with other union members to improve and grow in my role as VP so that I can better support and advocate for UNAC and SCNSC members.
