Advanced Union Training Strengthens Affiliates
January 2011
UNAC/UHCP provides an Advanced Labor Management Training that offers a practical application of the skills learned from the introductory Basic Labor Management Training to guide members in effective resolution of grievance, arbitration, corrective action and other issues at their affiliates. UNAC/UHCP held its most recent Advanced Labor Management Training in November with nearly 30 members in attendance.
"With UNAC/UHCP we know we are not alone and have collective bargaining agreements that allow us to stand up for our rights," stated Jonathan Bestwick, RN, an affiliate member at Kaiser Baldwin Park. "The advanced class provides us with tools to become better advocates for union members and build better working relationships between our facilities and our union."
UNAC/UHCP's Advanced Labor Management Training Class is open to all affiliate members who first complete the Basic Labor Management Training Class. Union members learn about the grievance and arbitration processes negotiated in their union contracts, as well as how to better serve as effective affiliate representatives throughout these processes. Participants earn continuing education units (CEUs) for the two-day class, which consists of speakers and group role playing exercises.
"This class empowers us to use our voice in the workplace in a positive way to improve patient care delivery and our working environment," commented Kita Stovall, RN, BSN, a Kaiser West L.A. Registered Nurses Association member. "UNAC/UHCP gives us the support we need to become effective change agents for our fellow members and our professions."
